How to price used textbooks

Textbooks hold value differently from novels — the right edition at the right time of year can sell in days, while an outdated one may never move. Here's how to price yours realistically.

Edition matters more than age

A current-edition textbook can command 40–60% of its new price; one edition behind usually drops to 20–30%; two or more behind is nearly a giveaway unless the course still uses it. State the edition clearly in your listing — it's the first thing a student checks.

Time your listing to the academic calendar

Demand peaks in the weeks before a term starts and again before exams. A textbook listed mid-holiday competes with nobody's urgency. If you can wait, list when students are buying.

Grade condition honestly — highlighting counts

Students tolerate highlighting more than novel readers do, but be upfront about it in the condition notes. An honestly-described Good copy sells; a 'Like New' copy that arrives marked up earns you a bad review.

Bundle a subject, not random leftovers

Three first-year accounting texts as one bundle is a natural purchase for one buyer. Three unrelated books is not. Bundle by course or subject and price the set at a visible discount to the individual prices.
